Men's Soccer:
Sewanee Defeats Carthage, 6-1, in Opener
(Sewanee, Tenn.) -- Sewanee senior Ryan Davis scored a hat trick to lead the Tigers to a 6-1 season-opening win against Carthage (Wisc.) in the Kyle Rote Jr. Invitational here Saturday in men's soccer.
Sophomore transfer (from Trinity U., Texas) Kyle Johnston picked up his first goals as a Sewanee Tiger as he opened the scoring in the 30th minute on an assist from senior Andrew North (former Chattanooga Baylor player) off his corner kick.
Davis scored the next three goals in a span of 25 minutes (55th, 75th, 80th), while junior Andy Leffler scored the final two in the 85th and 89th minutes.
North picked up two assists on the day, while freshman Andy Mantini, Kemper Blairr and Arch Durham each had one assist.
Alex Myer scored in the 89th minute for Carthage.
Sewanee plays Webster (Mo.), a 2-1 winner against Oglethorpe, Sunday at noon CDT for the tournament championship. Sewanee has won seven of the nine tournament championships, including last season. Webster was the 1999 tournament winner, defeating Sewanee, 2-1.
Sewanee now has won four straight, including three straight wins at the end of the 2000 season. Sewanee was 16-3-0 last season.
The Gorloks of Webster (1-0) were 10-7-2 last season and lost
in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

"Tomorrow's game with Webster will be a battle. They are the two time defending SLIAL Champions and have participated in the national tournament the last two years. We will need to play extremely well to get a result."
