FAQs for incoming students

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do any art history courses satisfy the college's general education distribution requirment in the Arts?

All art history courses can be taken to satisfy this requirement.

Which art history courses are best suited to incoming freshmen?

Normally, first-year students, if they choose to enroll in art history, sign up for one of our introductory courses. These include ArtH 103 "Survey of Western Art I"; ArtH 104 "Survey of Western Art II"; ArtH 206 "History of Architecture"; and ArtH 212 "American Animation." Usually, ArtH 103 and ArtH 212 are offered in the Advent (fall) semester.

What if I want to major in art history? Which courses should I take?

Alll majors are required to take both halves of the Survey of Western Art (ArtH 103 & ArtH 104). So it's usually best to start with one of these. You may take them in either order.

I took AP Art History in high school: will I have advanced standing in the major?

Possibly, but you must take the AP exam. If you earn a 5 on the AP exam, you are not required to complete the introductory surveys and may enroll in upper-division courses. Just contact the professor of the course you wish to enroll in and he or she will waive the prerequisites in your case. If you earn a 4 on the AP exam, you will earn credit hours toward graduation, but not advanced standing in the major.
