Welcome from the Department Chair:
Art history is thriving at Sewanee. At least a quarter of all Sewanee undergraduates take a course in art history and, each year, ten to twenty students choose to major in this field.
Recent graduates are working in museums, galleries, art libraries, and auction houses. Some of our graduates pursue advanced degrees in art history. In the past five years, graduates have matriculated into MA or PhD programs at Oxford University, Case Western University, University of Texas at Austin, Vanderbilt University, University of Georgia, University of Delaware, State University of New York at Stony Brook, and University of South Carolina.
Additionally, Sewanee students graduating with a degree in art history have established careers in the law, medicine, veterinary science, advertising, web design, architecture, and finance.
Even before moving on to graduate school or their careers, our students regularly present their research at academic meetings such as the Southeast College Art Conference.
Many of our majors spend a semester or year studying abroad. Last year, majors studied in Australia, France, Italy, Greece, and Turkey. We encourage our students to take advantage of these opportunities whenever possible. The university's financial aid office can provide information on "portable financial aid," or funding that students can use to finance study abroad.
The department also organizes regular trips to regional and national art museums. Art Forum, a student-managed arts advocacy organization, sponsors lectures by prominent art historians from around the country.
We're looking forward to the coming year and welcome your comments and questions.
On behalf of my colleagues in art history,
Mishoe Brennecke
