Studying Medicine in Greece

The Medicine in Greece fellowship will merge the study of the practice medicine through coursework from MHUM218 Origins in Medicine with practical hands-on experiences through hospital shadowing. Students will shadow a total of 20 hours per week in Greece for a total of 40+ hours. The program begins in Sewanee, where students will begin their coursework in medical humanities, specifically focusing on readings about healthcare practices and reforms and their impact on patient care. Greece is an ideal location to examine medical traditions and origins of western medical culture. While in Greece, students will engage in cultural excursions and will work with Sewanee faculty to reflect on their readings and discuss connections to their shadowing experiences. These joint activities are ideal in helping students interested in a career in medicine see the complexities of medical practice and build their own personal competencies that medical graduate schools are looking for in training tomorrow’s leaders in healthcare. This opportunity is ideal for pre-medical and pre-health students looking to build their cultural competencies and learn more about healthcare systems globally.
