Beersheba Clinic Service Day
Sewanee students volunteered at Beersheba Springs Medical Clinic, a non-profit medical facility located in Grundy County. This clinic plays a key role in serving Grundy County, home to the poorest health outcomes in Tennessee. The clinic is currently undergoing an expansion and renovation to include additional units for dentistry, psychiatry, and ultrasounds. Seventeen Sewanee students helped with the renovations.
Marq Schieber, C’20, writes about his experience:
Assisting with the renovations at the Beersheba Springs Medical Clinic made me realize the current and future significance of the clinic in the Grundy County. It was extremely gratifying to know that the building we were restoring would be the location of a new dental office and sonography center, both of which will be free to the public. A dental office will be a tremendous contribution to the community as it will provide a previously absent, but much needed service. Several students participated from the Sewanee Multicultural Health Society, the Sewanee Health Professions Society and the Healthy Hut. We started with clearing out the building, so painting of the interior could begin. Later, we were split into various groups to perform different jobs around the building. I worked outside, where jobs included power washing the side of the building, trimming trees and bushes in the vicinity, replacing window shutters and constructing a ramp for handicap accessibility at the front entrance. Even after just a few hours, the future office was taking on a new light.
This amazing makeover would not have taken place if it weren’t for the generous gift by a Sewanee alumnus, John Clark. I am looking forward to going back to the Beersheba Springs clinic to help further complete the renovations.
