Office of Global Citizenship

‌International Education Week (IEW) was created by the US Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs in 2000, and IEW is celebrated annually by universities across the country. The Office of Global Citizenship invites Sewanee faculty, staff, and students to participate in this annual celebration by (1) attending IEW events on campus and by (2) offering suggestions for workshops, performances, forums, or other scholarly or creative works that celebrate international education.

Eat Drink Man Woman

This 1994 Taiwanese film follows Mr. Chu, a widower who is a master Chinese chef and his three unmarried daughters, each of whom challenges any narrow definition of traditional Chinese culture. Life in the house revolves around the ritual of an elaborate dinner each Sunday, and the love lives of all the family members. The film received the Asia Pacific Film Festival Award for Best Film, and in 1995 it received an Academy Award Nomination for Best Foreign Language Film

Photo Contest Kick Off

All staff, faculty, and students are invited to participate in an internationally-focused photo contest. Details are below.

Theme: Photos should demonstrate the theme of International Education Week: "Global Citizenship: Exploring the world together."

Rules: Submitted photos should be in the highest resolution available. Avoid inappropriate subject matter. By submitting photos, you agree that the Office of Global Citizenship may use your photo(s) for promotional use. Students may submit more than one photo.

To Enter: Email your photo and a description of the photo to by Thursday, November 16, at noon. The description should include the name of the person submitting the photo, where photo was taken, and how the photo demonstrates the theme of international education week. Photos received after noon on Thursday, November 16, will not be considered. 

Winners: Two winners will be chosen: One for the best photo, and one people's choice. Each winner will receive a $50 gift card to Amazon.

Student Panel

Internationally-minded students discuss the theme of IEW: Global citizenship...Exploring the world together. There will be a short reception following the panel discussion.

Russian Triva Night

Join the Russian house for a night of Russian trivia and games.

Wednesday, November 15

Wer Wenn Nicht Wir 

If Not Us, Who? is a 2011 German drama directed by Andres Veiel. The film introduces viewers to the Baader-Meinhof terrorists of the 70's and the Red Army Faction through a radical love story between Gudrun Ensslin and Bernward Vesper. The film has won six international awards.

Movida Madrileña

The Spanish house is hosting a costume party (80s) to celebrate the cultural movement that liberated Spain after the Spanish dictatorship. The party will feature costumes, awards, gift cards, retro music, and tapas.

Around the World

"Around the World" promotes the wide range of cultures that are represented at Sewanee. Student leaders organize tables to represent their home culture, with an array of cultural decorations, art, games, music, etc. In just two hours, students are able to "travel around the world" and learn about the cultural diversity represented in our student body. McClurg is contributing to the event by preparing several international dishes for all students to try.
