Center For Teaching Activities: 2002 - 2003

• New Faculty Orientation:

[1] Organized an afternoon discussion on teaching at Sewanee after the first full week of classes;
[2] Held a series of lunches -- initially for first-year faculty and then included second-year faculty too;
[3] arranged one mentor (other new faculty weren't interested).

• Organized the Lilly “Values in Research” series -- four catered lunches.

• Organized Lilly luncheon talks for two visiting Lilly fellows.

• Co-organized the Lilly “Values and Teaching” series. The Center for Teaching helped to set up the series that the Philosophy Club then ran – perhaps 10 talks over two semesters.

• Co-organized a Lilly luncheon-workshop on campus values for faculty and Student Affairs. David Hoekema acted as facilitator

• Organized a Lilly teaching workshop and catered lunch with John Roth.

• Together with Kevin Reynolds began organizing a bibliography on teaching resources at duPont Library.

• Co-organized a technology fair with Academic Technology Services and duPont Library.

• Organized a series of teaching lunches at McClurg (2 first semester, 4 second).

• In conjunction with the teaching lunches, the Center wrote up and distributed seven reports on two topics.

• Held two grant competitions, making 9 awards first semester and 13 second, and administered previously made grants.

• Administered numerous small grants (e.g. funding teaching journals, conference registration for students, etc.).

• Initiated an “Intellectual Challenges of Teaching” series with the Gownsmen. Planned for three talks, cancellations left only one -- a panel discussion with a catered lunch on teaching gender issues.

• Initiated research projects on faculty teaching styles and student intellectual lives.

• Presented our initial research on students to a First Year Program faculty workshop.
