Photo journalist Stephen Alvarez (C'87) presented photographs from his Setember 2006 National Geographic Magazine story covering the wild-water caves of the South Pacific. The photographs documented a three-month expedition to explore river caves on the island of New Britain (located off the coast of Papua New Guinea).


Bill McKnight, current C1 world champion and Sewanee Alum, ran a weekend kayak clinic. Students practiced their technique on campus at Lake Cheston. Later that weekend they paddled two rivers.



Hans Florine holds the record for the 2000ft. "Nose" route in Yosemite Valley, an unbelievably fast, 2hrs and 48 minutes. He visited Sewanee to share his adventures with us and give a climbing clinic. During the climbing clinic Hans shared tips on how best to improve your climbing. Hans' new book "Speed Climbing! How to Climb Faster and Better," was released in Novermber 2004.


The Urban Ape visits Sewanee

Outside Magazine and the Sewanee Outing Program teamed up to bring world-class climber Timmy O'Neill to Sewanee. Timmy shared of his adventures to the big walls of Greenland plus two short climbing films, "Urban Ape" and "Suspended Animation".

After the show Timmy O'Neill went caving with 12 Sewanee students in a vertical cave located on campus. Our caving trip lasted from 9:00pm to 1:30 am....quite an experience.

Enduring Patagonia

Greg Crouch shared his stories of the first winter ascent of Cerro Torre's West Face. He and three Swiss climber's David Fasel, Thomas Ullrich, and Stefan Siegrist had a wild time in the beautiful and terrible mountains of Patagonia.

Crouch's book, "Enduring Patagonia", chronicles his obsession with the Patagonian region. He has made seven expeditions to the Patagonian Andes and in his book he explores the world of cutting-edge alpinism.
