The 10,000 acre Domain of the University of the South offers students climbing opportunities on 15 miles of cliff lines. Most climbing sites are a short walk or bike ride from central campus. The sandstone crags range from 35 to 80 feet in height and include vertical slabs and classic steep south overhangs. The more than 50 established routes are dominantly top rope climbs, but several sport routes and trad routes also exist. Grades range from 5.4 to 5.12 d.

In addition, Sewanee boasts superb bouldering opportunities in close proximity to campus. A moderate climate ensures year-round climbing and large overhangs provide dry bouldering during wet weather.

Other more famous climbing areas are a short distance by car. Foster Falls is 20 minutes from campus, while the Tennessee Wall (T-Wall) and Sunset Rock are about an hour by car.

WARNING: Rock climbing is an inherently dangerous activity. You must seek qualified instruction before climbing and bouldering. Students at the University of the South are directed to the Sewanee Outing Program (SOP), where they may obtain suitable instruction. The Sewanee Rock Climbing web site is not a place to find such instruction, nor is it a guide to climbs in the area.
