Professional educators, especially at the secondary level, are on the "front line" of society, in the "trenches". Today's youth spend more time around their teachers than their own families. This being the case, if there are problems with America's youth, which there are plenty, teachers have an extraordinary opportunity to step up and do something about it. In the same light if there is anything good about today's youth the mandate falls on our teachers to identify and nurture these things to maturity. This being said, my mission as a professional educator will be to professionally implement "Sewanee's Standards of Effective Teaching" and thus positively change those students' lives which I will be privileged to teach, to provide to the best of my ability a learning environment that is conducive to the needs of my students with the goal being not only to assure their mastery of the subject matter but to insure that they don't sell themselves short, that they achieve their hopes and dreams. Teachers have this opportunity, to positively change the lives of our youth and therefore the future of our society.
