1857    Trustees convene at Lookout Mountain, Tennessee on July 4

1857    Trustees meet in Montgomery, Ala., select university location & name

1858    Tennessee state legislature grants charter in January


1860    A ceremonial cornerstone is laid in what is now Louisiana Circle

1861    Civil War begins, interrupting the creation of the University

1866    Otey Hall, the first permanent building, constructed as a seminary

1868    Construction of the first chapel, St. Augustine's

1868    The Junior Department opens; later renamed Sewanee Grammar School and then Sewanee Miltary Academy in 1908

1868    University officially opens in September with 4 professors and 9 students


1870    Ecce Quam Bonum Club opens; General store constructed: now Shenanigans; EQB club founded as Faculty Club

1871    First Gowns awarded

1872    Red robe presented to Charles Todd Quintard, Vice Chancellor

1873    University cemetery created

1875    The first recorded athletic event for Sewanee, a baseball game played in Tullahoma in which Sewanee defeated the Arctics of Lynchburg 24-9
1876    First documentation of the Honor Code

1877    First stone building, Hodgson Hall, built

1877    Sewanee's first social fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega, organized

1881    Tennessee chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon established

1882    Kappa Sigma established

1883    Kappa Alpha established

1883    Phi Delta Theta established

1883    Delta Tau Delta established

1886    Convocation Hall built to serve as first gymnasium

1886    Breslin Tower built, modeled after Magdalen College of Oxford

1888    Eastern Star Cemetary created

1889    Sigma Nu established
1891    Royal purple selected as Sewanee color. First football game. Cornerstone laid for Walsh Hall.


1890    Military discontinues at College, to reappear in times of national crisis

1891    Hardee Field, fourth oldest football field in the nation, constructed

1891    Sewanee Cumberland Presbyterian Church founded

1892    Sewanee Purple begins

1892    Medical School opens

1893    Law School opens

1896    Summer Music School inaugurated
1899    First hospital opens

1899    University farm established to provide food for students and faculty

1899    Football team wins six games in 6 days


1900    Rev. Douglas donates clock and chimes

1901    Convocation Hall becomes library.

1905    Construction on All Saints' Chapel begins.

1907    Work on All Saints' stops due to bank failure.

1909    Medical School closes


1915    The Dixie Highway goes through the Domain. This is the same roadway that now is known as University Avenue

1917    Thompson Union completed. Ambulance unit travels to France to join war effort.

1918    Magnolia Hall becomes main dining hall

1919    Phi Gamma Delta established.


1926    Sewanee Elementary School built by local citizen.


1937    Graduate School of Theology begins


1941    Final football game against Vanderbilt

1949    Beta Theta Pi established


1952    Gailor Hall built

1953    School of Theology integrated after faculty protest and walkout

1956    First Sewanee Summer Music Center

1957    Juhan Gymnasium constructed

1957    Jackson-Myers Airfield dedicated

1959    All Saints' Chapel completed


1960    University Farm closes

1960    Mountain Goat train stops running

1960    First Festival of Lessons and Carols celebrated

1961    College integrated

1963    Lambda Chi Alpha established

1964    Alpha Tau Delta established

1964    Sewanee Public Schools integrated

1965    duPont Library replaces library in Convocation Hall

1965    Gamma Sigma Phi established

1968    Sewanee Military Academy opens doors to women

1968    St. Mary's School for girls closes

1969    Delta Kappa Epsilon established

1969    Sewanee officially becomes coeducational


1970    Freshmen beanies no longer required

1971    Sewanee Military Academy becomes Sewanee Academy

1973    First class of women graduate

1975    All Saints' Chapel consecrated

1977    First local sorority, Theta Kappa Phi, established

1978    Gamma Tau Upsilon

1979    Theta Pi established

1979    Alpha Delta Theta established

1979    Alpha Tau Zeta established


1980    Phi Kappa Epsilon established

1981    St Andrew's School merges with Sewanee Academy

1984    School of Theology moves to Sewanee Academy Campus

1986    George Bush, Sr. awarded honorary degree

1994    Robert Dobbs Fowler Center completed

1999    Phi Sigma Theta established

1999    Kappa Omega established


2001    McClurg Hall opens

2003    Sewanee's first nationally affiliated sorority founded- Kappa Delta

2004    Chapel of the Apostles completed

2004    Donne Bentley Wright donates Bentley Bells
